Meet Lakeyah Scales
Lakeyah is a proud native of Chicago’s South Side and the principal attorney at Balancing the Scales Family Law Firm.
A graduate of DePaul University College of Law, she distinguished herself through a variety of impactful roles, including Teaching Assistant for the Family Law Course at Depaul College of Law, Research Assistant for the legendary Professor Roberta Kwall, and Managing Editor of the DePaul Journal for Social Justice. As a 711-student attorney in the Schiller Ducanto and Fleck Family Law Clinic, Lakeyah gained invaluable hands-on experience. Her dedication to the field earned her the prestigious Schiller Ducanto and Fleck Family Law Fellowship, as well as the Cook County Bar Association Foundation Scholarship in 2022.
Before embarking on her journey to obtain her J.D., Lakeyah earned a Master of Jurisprudence in Child and Family Law from DePaul and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and English from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She began her professional career as a corporate litigation paralegal, where she developed a keen understanding of legal processes and client advocacy.
Now leading her firm, Lakeyah specializes in family law, focusing on divorce, adoption, child support, guardianship, and allocation of parental responsibilities. She is dedicated to using her legal expertise to empower others facing similar challenges on their journey to becoming attorneys.
Beyond her legal pursuits, Lakeyah treasures her role as a mother to a wonderful daughter and a spirited (to say the least) standard poodle. She is also an avid bookstagrammer, sharing her passion for fiction and literary discoveries on Instagram at @wakenbook.
